Volkswagen’s MOIA brand has unveiled the production version of a ‘turnkey’ driverless Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD that it will launch in Europe and the US next year.
Capable of Level 4 fully autonomous driving, the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD features an extended wheelbase and raised roof and comes with its own software ecosystem and services for operators of autonomous mobility services.
Other changes within include wood flooring and just four passenger seats.
The first images show how the two passenger front seats have been replaced by extra storage space for luggage.
The driving seat and steering wheel remain in place, but the front seat can be pushed all the way forward, with the wheel covered by a panel to prevent any onboard passengers taking over the driving duties.
Instead, there’s an SOS and ‘support’ button that will connect you to on-hand help, if required.
Ensuring it is capable of fully autonomous driving, the ID. Buzz AD comes with a total of 27 sensors that includes 13 cameras, nine LiDARs and five radars that provide the computers onboard with a 360-degree view of the world.
Powering the hardware is Mobileye’s self-driving software that works with a MOIA-developed Autonomous Driving Mobility as a Service (AD MaaS) Ecosystem Platform.
Confirming it will offer its new tech to both public and private firms, the turnkey packages are said to allow mobility providers to ramp up their autonomous offering quickly and safely.
Helping operate a fleet of driverless ID. Buzz vans, MOIA has also created what it describes as a “fully connected 360-degree package made up of leading technology, an attractive vehicle fleet, intelligent fleet management, and a customer-centric booking system – all from a single source.”
Exact timings and where the 2026 Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD will launch first in the US and Europe have not been revealed but will be related to local legislation and whether they permit driverless vehicles to operate unsupervised without a licensed safety driver on board.
