It’s a city that’s hardly known for understatement, but even Dubai residents were gobsmacked to recently clap their eyes on the latest addition to the local police fleet – a 515kW, 350km/h Lamborghini Aventador.
However, would-be ram raiders and do-badders needn’t fear too much, because the V12 is more publicity-generating hype machine than high-speed pursuit weapon.
The exact specifics on the deal done between Lamborghini and Dubai Police for the acquisition of car aren’t known, but it’s served as a great PR vehicle for both parties as images of the car have been popping up on websites all over the world.
It’s not the first time the raging bull of Santa’Agata has made one of its products available to the constabulary as a few years ago the hallowed carmaker donated a pair of Gallardos to the Italian police – equipped with transmitters to send images back to HQ, a defibrillator for accidents and a fridge for transporting donor organs.
However, the Dubai Police’s Aventador is a pure showpony as its brief is to cruise around tourist areas and provide proof of “how classy Dubai is”, according to Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police’s Deputy Commander General.
Dubai Police has a highly eclectic vehicle fleet that includes the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, Nissan X-Trail, Toyota Prado, Nissan Pathfinder and Hummer H3, among others.
In recent times the Dubai Police fleet has also been supplemented by the US-built Dodge Charger and Chevy Camaro, adding further diversity to the line-up.
The officers commandeering the Aventador are no doubt getting used to being gawked at like celebrities, even though some toll will be taken on their spines and necks by the ferocious Lambo’s stiff suspension and jerky ISR sequential gearbox.
