MG Motor is readying a station wagon version of its current MG4 electric hatchback that will go on sale in China and Europe later this year.
Created to replace the MG5 SW EV that was launched in 2020 (but actually dates back to the Roewe i5 introduced in 2017), the all-new MG4 compact wagon could finally make it Down Under if the Chinese car-maker’s Australian subsidiary finds a business case for a larger, more practical version of its latest electric car.
Sharing the MG4’s dedicated EV-specific modular scalable architecture, the wagon is likely to have a longer wheelbase that will translate into a more spacious cabin and cargo area.
Set to share powertrains with the regular MG4, it’s feasible that as well as the 150kW and 180kW versions, the Chinese brand might also offer its load hauler with the wild XPOWER dual-motor set-up.
If so, expect it to produce the same 320kW and 600Nm of torque as the hatch, and for the all-electric Volkswagen Golf R wagon alternative to launch from 0-100km/h in less than four seconds.
There’s no word on what exactly will happen with the MG5 SW nameplate, although it’s thought it will probably be renamed to avoid confusion with the cut-price combustion-powered small sedan.
Whatever’s the case, the replacement for the elderly MG5 and almost equally old ZS and HS SUVs are all set for more tech and a bolder design, according to MG Europe’s design boss Carl Gotham.
Speaking to Autocar, Gotham said: “Some of the products are coming to the end of their journey and we’re in a really strong position, especially at 100 years old, to take a confident, bold step forward with the new products: update the technology, update the image, but still make it still very affordable and accessible for people.
“We don’t want to alienate anybody from the brand.
“That’s really MG’s advantage. It’s always about offering experiences that were maybe [historically] much more inaccessible to everyday people.”
As well as introducing the MG4 wagon in Europe and potentially right-hand drive markets like the UK before the end of this year, MG will also offer the all-new next-generation replacement mid-size Marvel R SUV for the first time in right-hand drive with an arrival slated for 2025.
The car-maker will also roll out its most affordable EV yet in 2025 when it launches a small city car that will be priced from less than €20,000 ($A33,100).
