The all-new 2024 BMW i7 Protection and regular 7 Series Protection have been revealed, with both limousines claimed to be able to protect occupants from explosives and sustained attack from firearms.
Said to be the first all-electric vehicle of its type offered in Europe, the BMW i7 Protection is claimed to offer outstanding security for at-risk individuals while maintaining the zero-emissions limo’s driving dynamics, ride quality and interior comfort.
Aside from the optional flashing lights and flagpole mounts for dignitaries, the big BMW looks identical to the standard battery-powered i7.
It also rides on 20-inch wheels, although they’re wrapped in specially developed Michelin PAX run-flat tyres that allow the vehicle to drive at up to 80km/h on four deflated tyres.
The car has also received a big upgrade for the brakes to deal with the extra weight, which comes from the BMW Protection core armoured steel structure that can withstand bullets and explosives.
The armour is both for the exterior skin and underbody, while there’s thick safety glass and a self-sealing fuel tank for the combustion-powered model.
Able to withstand both a drone and grenade attach, the i7 and 7 Series Protection also carry a fresh air supply and fire extinguisher.
Even though the big limo now has a much thicker skin, engineers have also focused on maintaining both spaciousness and comfort inside, without compromising technology.
It comes equipped with a standard intercom, while both the driver and passengers are able speak to people outside without having to lower a window, thanks to an exterior microphone and speaker.
There’s also a 28-speaker 1265W Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system too, when you’re not in the mood for talking.
In the rear, electric sunblinds on the side windows offer a semi-closed ‘spy position’ to allow occupants to look out. A further blind on the rear window enhances privacy further.
All glass areas around the vehicle are heated, ensuring they remain clear in low temperatures.
Special options include a constant feed from the rear cameras, so you know who’s following you, plus a rear cool box between the rear seats.
Available with the BMW i7 xDrive60 powertrain, the i7 Protection comes with dual electric motors that produce 400kW and 745Nm of torque.
Despite its respectable power outputs, an undisclosed imposing kerb weight blunts acceleration and top speed, with the i7 Protection only able to manage a 0-100km/h sprint of 9.0 seconds and a 160km/h top speed.
There’s no word yet on how range has been impacted.
If that’s too slow, the BMW 7 Series Protection gets the mild-hybrid twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 that produces 390kW and 750Nm of torque.
It can launch from 0-100km/h in a far more respectable 6.6 seconds while topping out at more than 210km/h.
Both armoured BMWs come with an upgraded chassis tune that can support the increase in weight while maintaining comfort. Four-wheel steering is also standard, boosting agility.
Made in the same Dingolfing plant as the regular BMW i7 and 7 Series, BMW has yet to release pricing for its two new Protection model.
And for now at least, the all-electric version will only be offered to European customers.
Expect more details following its official launch at next month’s Munich motor show ahead of first deliveries beginning in December.
