Electric Caterham Project V sports car set for July 12 debut
British brand shows more of retro-styled battery-powered sports car ahead of Goodwood unveilingCaterham has released a new video previewing its Caterham Project V electric sports car.
Set to be officially unwrapped on July 12 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Caterham Project V shows off its rear-end styling for the first time in the latest teaser, including its oval LED tail-lights, illuminated CATERHAM lettering, round roof and curvy rear wheel-aches.
The video also hints at a subtle ducktail boot lid spoiler.
Up front, we get a fresh look at the Project V’s shapely snout and its horizontal strip lamps and large air intakes in the lower corners of the front bumper.
The latest teaser also gives us a clearer idea of the Caterham EV’s small proportions. It’s thought the new sports car will be strictly a two-seater.
Created to mark Caterham’s 50th anniversary, Project V has been developed to be lightweight, fun to drive and driver focused in a similar vein to its iconic Seven roadster.
The powertrain is likely to be an evolution of the single e-motor set-up from the recent Caterham EV Seven concept, which featured a 240kW/250Nm rear-mounted electric motor and could accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than 4.0 seconds.
The EV Seven also featured a lightweight 51kWh (40kWh useable) battery incorporating advanced liquid cooling that allowed it to be recharged from 0-100 per cent in just 15 minutes using a 150kW DC fast-charger.
Employing a small battery meant that the EV Seven concept weighed in at just 701kg – only 70kg more than a Caterham Seven 485.
The addition of a roof on the Project V and some extra luxury appointments like a heater and air-con are bound to boost the kerb weight, but the EV will still be a lightweight model.
It will be based around a steel spaceframe and feature a body made either of aluminium or carbon-fibre.
It’s not clear when the production version of the Caterham Project V will be introduced, but rumours suggest it’s being readied for a 2026 launch.
Caterham has already announced plans to boost production by around 50 per cent to 750 cars annually in the near-term.
