Electric Chevrolet Blazer SS breaks cover

No luck for a Holden Commodore SS EV, with GM now banking on battery-powered Chevy Blazer SS

General Motors has uncovered its first battery-powered SS-badged performance car in the form of the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS ahead of its official debut on July 18.

The famed SS badge has long been synonymous with V8-powered muscle cars such as the Chevrolet Camaro and, deep in the heart of many Aussie car enthusiasts, performance sedans – RIP the Holden Commodore SS.

News first broke of the iconic moniker’s transition to EVs back in March, when GM showed us the badge of Chevrolet Blazer EV SS that has now been shown in full for the first time.

The standard Chevrolet Blazer is already an aggressive-looking thing by modern SUV standards and the EV SS version takes that a step further with a redesigned grille, aero bumper elements, an integrated splitter, bespoke alloy wheels, an illuminated badge, full-width lighting signature and even a different hip line, just to name a few keynote changes.

There’s even a hint of Lamborghini Urus in the overall design and silhouette.

Eagle-eyed readers will also note the segmented air duct on the back of the front-left wheel-arch; not only does it add to the overall aesthetic and play a part in lowering the car’s drag coefficient, it also houses the charging port with the cover electronically lifting out of the way.

Full details of the first SS-badged EV are still under wraps, but GM chief executive Mary Barra has promised all will be revealed on July 18.

“Allow me to share a sneak peek at the all-new Chevrolet Blazer EV,” she tweeted.

“I can’t wait until July 18, when we share the details with the world.”

Given its identity as a new-generation GM EV, the Chevrolet Blazer EV SS is widely anticipated to be underpinned and powered by The General’s Ultium electric vehicle platform and drive systems – as found on the monster GMC Hummer EV.

There’s no word yet on right-hand drive production, but if given the green-light the Blazer SS EV could be a welcome addition to the boutique GMSV stable in Australia.
