Electric Kia Stinger successor to offer 450kW, report claims

Kia’s next-generation GT sports sedan could be the first car to ride on Hyundai-Kia’s new EV platform

The all-electric successor to the Kia Stinger sports sedan will pack up to 450kW of power and draw energy from one of the biggest battery packs ever utilised on a mass-produced EV, according to a report out of South Korea.

Citing industry sources in its home market, the ETNews report says Kia’s next flagship four-door sedan is being developed under the project name GT1 and will be underpinned by Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation ‘eM’ electric vehicle architecture, which will include a 113.2kWh battery pack.

The GT1 will reportedly be available from 2025 in two model grades based around a dual-motor/all-wheel drive powertrain, with both EVs able to cover more than 700km on a single charge with the giant battery on-board.

The entry-level version is said to produce a combined 320kW from its twin e-motor layout (based on two 160kW units), while the flagship GT will blend a 200kW front motor with a 250kW rear unit for a combined output of 450kW, comfortably making it the most powerful Hyundai-Kia model to date.

No performance claims have been made, but you can bet the GT1 will be faster and more efficient than the Kia EV6 GT which, for reference, stops the clock from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds and can cover up to 424km between charges.

Kia has been tight-lipped for years on a Stinger replacement, but the Korean brand is widely expected to offer a full-electric sports sedan as part of its plan to launch at least seven new EVs globally before 2027.

These already include the Kia EV6, EV5 and inbound EV9.

The new Hyundai IONIQ 6 sedan is enjoying plenty of sales success and should yield a track-honed N Performance flagship – as previewed by the Hyundai RN22e – in the lead-up to the GT1’s release.

The two models will likely have similar power and performance figures, but the Kia will more than likely be positioned as more of a grand tourer than all-out track monster as per both the combustion-engined Stinger and the battery-electric EV6 GT.
