Electric MG Cyberster roadster makes debut

MGB reborn as battery-powered supercar with 800km range and explosive performance

MG has pulled the drapes off its striking new MG Cyberster sports car concept ahead of its official debut at the Shanghai motor show.

Created to be a "vision of the future" under SAIC ownership, the 2021 MG Cyberster is claimed to preview MG's new design language and technology while at the same time paying tribute to the MGB that was launched back in 1962.

Designed at parent company SAIC's London design studio, the Cyberster has been created to feature aerodynamically-honed looks that enable the MG to cover a deeply impressive 800km between top-ups.

The new aero aids include its large front air duct, 'kamm tail' flat rear-end and 'hacker blade' wheel designs, plus its rear flying buttresses that carefully manage air to minimise drag.

Other design features include 'Magic Eye' LED headlights that look modelled on a classic MG, and unusual LED stripes down its flanks highlighting its beltline.

At the rear, there's also a pair of tail-lights inspired by the Union Jack flag.

The MG Cyberster is claimed to be based on an all-new architecture specifically created for EVs.

No technical details have been released, other than its 800km range and that the roofless MG can hit 100km/h from standstill in less than 3.0 seconds.

The Cyberster also comes with Level 3 autonomous driving capability and the ability to upgrade software over the air.

More details are expected to be divulged at the vehicle's presentation at the Shanghai show on April 21.
