Electric Volkswagen ID baby SUV teased

Entry-level SUV based on ID.2all concept set to replace VW T-Cross in 2026, offering a 450km-plus range

VW has given us our first look at the incoming 2026 Volkswagen ID.2-based small SUV that’s set to offer a range of up to 450km and be priced from less than €30,000 ($A49,000).

Created to replace the current Volkswagen T-Cross that was launched back in 2019, the German car-maker’s smallest battery-powered SUV – which was shown in a darkened image released overnight – will be inspired by the Volkswagen ID.2all concept that premiered earlier this year.

Back in March, Volkswagen claimed the ID.2all would be the size of a Polo but offer the cabin space of a much larger Golf.

Developed alongside the incoming Volkswagen ID.2 hatch, Cupra Raval and an equivalent Skoda model (that has yet to be named), all four cars will be built at a factory in Spain and will be based on the VW Group’s shorter MEB Entry architecture.

The new teaser could preview a near-production ID.2all concept, which would then lead to the road-going car’s unveiling in 2025, with production set to begin late that year.

Come production, the small SUV is likely to carry a new name, following reports that Volkswagen’s numerical naming system is confusing to buyers.

Set to rival small SUVs like the Jeep Avenger and all-new Fiat Panda EV, the VW ID.2all is expected to be equipped with a 166kW front-mounted electric motor fed current by either a 38kWh or 56kWh battery, with the latter providing a WLTP-verified range of more than 450km.

Capable of being topped up at a rate of more than 125kW, the SUV would need only 20 minutes for a 10-80 per cent charge.

A year before it arrives, Volkswagen will launch the more affordable ID.2 hatch that’s set to be priced from about €25,000 ($A41,000).

Based on the concept’s dimensions – 4050mm long, 1812mm wide and 1530mm high, riding on a 2600mm wheelbase (the Golf has a 2630mm wheelbase) – the small ID.2all should easily be able to accommodate up to five passengers and have a large 490-litre boot.

Below the boot will be a further 50-litre lockable box to store the charging cable and any valuables when you’re away from the car.

Inside, expect a large 12.9-inch touch-screen with a new climate-control interface that incorporates the all-important illuminated buttons.

Despite its budget positioning, the most affordable VW SUV should keep its 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster and gain the car-maker’s latest multifunction steering wheel – in high-spec models, at least.

Fresh tech for the segment will include Volkswagen’s latest version of Travel Assist, with partly automated Level 2 driver assistance, including self-parking.

Flagship versions of the ID.2all should also boast Matrix LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a 3D LED tail-light cluster and a horizontal LED strip between them.
