Electrified Mitsubishi Delica concept teased

PHEV or even EV powered crossover people-mover concept to headline Mitsubishi’s Japan Mobility Show exhibit

Future generations of the Mitsubishi Delica could be zero-emissions, at least that’s what’s implied by the Japanese brand’s latest concept teaser.

In a media release issued today promoting its attendance at next week’s Japan Mobility Show, Mitsubishi released a promotional image of a futuristic all-terrain MPV kicking up dust in the desert somewhere.

Mitsubishi specifically describes the vehicle as an “electrified crossover MPV concept car” and confirmed it would make its world debut in the ‘Unexplored Adventures Area’ – one of three zones forming the Mitsubishi exhibit.

Show-goers will be able to get up close and personal with the concept – both in the metal and via a ride simulator, which will allow people to experience the concept’s “safe, comfortable and pleasant driving” in all weather and road conditions.

Battery-electric or plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the concept will almost certainly feature two motive power sources – ie: two electric motors or a combustion engine and motor combined – to gift it all-wheel drive.

If the powertrain ends up being a PHEV then chances are it will be an adapted version of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s system, which combines a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a pair of electric motors for combined outputs of 185kW/450Nm and AWD.

Mitsubishi’s other two display areas will be the ‘Active Leisure Area’ and the ‘Daily Adventures Area’, each with their own specific set of displays.

“The Unexplored Adventures Area that invites visitors to take on new challenges, the Active Leisure Area that makes them want to go one step further than usual, and the Daily Adventures Area that makes everyday life exciting and fun,” Mitsubishi said.

Joining the crossover MPV will be the new-generation Mitsubishi Triton ute in both production and competition guises, the Delica D:5, an Outlander PHEV disaster response vehicle, Delica Mini and the eK X EV4, along with myriad other production models and innovations.
