Holden continues to do respectable business in the light car segment with its Korean-sourced Kalos/Aveo-based Barina, now updated for the 2008 model year.
The upgrade is mostly cosmetic, but safety is improved with the addition of standard side-impact airbags for all variants in the model range. Holden reports that the side-impact airbags have been designed to protect both head and thorax in the event of a collision.
"With three body styles, striking exterior and interior design improvements, Barina will appeal to a broad range of customer groups," says Holden's Director of Marketing, Philip Brook. "Add side impact airbags and the package becomes even more attractive."
Along with the obvious external changes, Holden has revised the colour palette, which now comprises new colours: Fayence Uni metallic (N/A sedan), Impression Blue metallic, Urban Grey metallic, Carbon Flash Black metallic and Flame Red metallic (sedan only), joining the existing colours of: Arctic White, Chilli Red, Mercury Silver metallic and Horizon Blue metallic.
Inside, the Barina adopts new fabric trim and the instrument binnacle has been redesigned with gauge bezels now finished in matt chrome. The vents and HVAC controls in the centre fascia have been revised and the audio system is now MP3-compatible.
Pricing for the Barina starts from $14,490 for the three-door hatch, with automatic transmission a $2000 option. The sedan and five-door hatch are both priced at $15,990. An option pack of ABS and four 15-inch alloy wheels cost $1190 and metallic paint is the one other option, $300.
