Euro NCAP awards three new cars top marks

Lexus IS, Mazda6 and Corolla score five-star result in latest crash assessment
The European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) has released the results of its latest round of tests, awarding a five-star result to the new Lexus IS, Mazda6 and Toyota Corolla.
Not faring quite so well were the Opel Adam and Mitsubishi Mirage, both of which managed only a four-star result.
Lexus’ new-generation IS, tested in its 300h (hybrid) form, scored highly for adult occupant protection (91 per cent). Child occupant protection was very good (at 85 per cent) with the prestige sedan's pedestrian safety also scrubbing up nicely (at 80 per cent). The IS 300h was let down slightly by its safety assist score (of 66 per cent), although this was not low enough to prevent the mid-size Lexus achieving a five-star safety rating.
Staying in the mid-size arena, the all-new Mazda6 found itself scoring very well in both adult occupant protection (92 per cent) and safety assist (81 per cent) fields. Child occupant protection scored well (at 77 per cent) with pedestrian safety rated as good (at 66 per cent). The Mazda achieved a high average to be awarded a five-star result.
The small category managed big points in the latest round of Euro NCAP testing with the Toyota Corolla also managing top marks. The Corolla scored an exceptional adult occupant score (of 94 per cent) with very good marks for child occupant protection (at 82 per cent). Much like the Lexus, however, Corolla was let down slightly by its median pedestrian safety score (67 per cent) and safety assist tally (66 per cent).
The Mitsubishi Space Star, sold locally as the Mirage, achieved a four-star result in the latest round of tests. The Light segment hatch managed a very good adult occupant rating (of 90 per cent), though faired less well on child occupant protection (72 per cent) and pedestrian safety (73 per cent). Safety assist technology was rated as average (at 55 per cent).
Managing a slightly higher points tally, but still a four-star rating, was the Opel Adam. The Light hatch will not be sold in Australia, but managed a very good level of adult occupant protection (at 87 per cent), with good marks also for safety assist technology (at 81 per cent). Child occupant protection was slightly worse off (at 72 per cent) and pedestrian safety was rated as fair (at 65 per cent).
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has yet to award the new-generation Lexus IS or Mazda6 with a safety rating but has gifted the Toyota Corolla full marks (five stars). The Mitsubishi Mirage also receives a five-star result locally.
