Renault-Nissan's ambitions for global leadership in the zero-emissions vehicle market have received a boost with a deal to provide European fleet management giant LeasePlan with electric vehicles. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to "study ways to promote the use of electric vehicles and... investigate the options for a commercial approach towards corporate fleet customers," according to a joint press release. It will see them nutting out terms and conditions for large-scale supply by Renault-Nissan of electric vehicles to LeasePlan and its clients.
Amsterdam-based LeasePlan runs fleets totalling 1.4 million vehicles in 30 countries. The deal stands to provide a substantial fillip for its GreenPlan sustainability initiative, introduced in 2007, to encourage its customer base towards lower CO2 emissions.
With its use of online reporting tools to measure, monitor and track individual vehicle CO2 emissions across each customer fleet, GreenPlan has achieved the much sought-after accreditation from technical services group TÜV Rheinland. TÜV conducts stringent independent audits of all areas of client businesses to measure carbon footprints and ensure compliance with the Kyoto Protocol and the European Emission Trading Scheme (EU-ETS).
