Mattel, the maker of some of the world’s most popular toys has announced that they have partnered up with Warner Bros. to bring its Hot Wheels range of iconic and timeless toy cars, to the big screen in a live-action feature film.
Hot Wheels first hit toy stores back in 1968. Mattel's co-founder Elliot Handler aimed to create a product that was more fun for kids and less at collectors. When Handler saw the first product rolling along a floor, he reportedly said: "Those are some hot wheels." The name stuck.
50 years later and the company has sold more than six billion individual cars globally.
Now back to the idea of a live-action film, our first thought was hasn’t this been done before? Fast and the Furious, Need for Speed, Transformers, Herbie the Love Bug… Or will this will just be kids and adults playing with toy cars?
We will be waiting in anticipation to see what storyline eventuates and more importantly whether there will be the inclusion of the iconic bright orange loop-de-loop track. Another consideration is which big name Hollywood star will nab the lead role? Recently, Mattel and Warner Bros. announced that Barbie would become a live-action film starring Aussie actor Margot Robbie, which is a big coup.
Hot Wheels has already ventured into crazy concept cars, live stunts as well as inclusion in games such as Forza Horizon 3 but a live-action film is a new frontier.
