Who'd be a manufacturer's PR representative?
With the official embargo date on the launch of the long-awaited Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X still almost a week away, US website Edmunds.com has spilled the beans.
The new Evo X is based on the all-new Lancer launched here just last week. It's bigger, bolder and more comprehensively equipped than the car it replaces, but little of the Evo's legendary performance appears to have been sacrificed.
We can't reveal the official details yet, but according to Edmunds, the Evo X features a new all-alloy engine, Mitsubishi's own sequential automated manual gearbox and a beefed-up structure that promises to deliver the most race-ready package yet.
Edmunds claims the new Evo will be offered in standard and MR versions -- at least in the domestic Japanese market. Down Under, it is likely just one high-spec version will be sold, however, Mitsubishi will also offer a cooking model Ralliart Lancer.
The Evo and Ralliart will fulfill similar roles to Subaru's WRX and WRX STi. Expect pricing for the two Mitsubishi models to be closely aligned with their sworn foe.
It had initially been expected Mitsubishi would unveil the Evo X at October's Tokyo motor show. Officially, the vehicle's global unveiling is now due on October 2. Edmunds' publication of the vehicle's details has put paid to those plans, it seems.
A silver lining for local Evo aficionados is that it now seems almost certain that Sydney's Australian International Motor Show at Darling Harbour next month will be the international motor show debut of the new vehicle.
The Carsales Network will bring you full details of the Evo X as soon as possible.
