A unique 1985 Holden VK Commodore SS Group A muscle car once used as a daily driver by Aussie touring car racing legend – the late, great Peter Brock – has set a new auction price record for a Holden production car.
The pristine 36-year-old sports sedan went under the hammer for $1.057 million at a Grays Online auction at 9:30pm last night, breaking the previous auction record for a Holden road car – $1.05m for a one-off HSV GTSR W1 Maloo ute, set in January.
However, it fell short of the $1.15m paid for an immaculate 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III in February, setting a new auction record for an Australian-made production car, and the outright record for a homegrown car – $2.1m for a Bathurst 1000-winning, ex-Brock Holden VH Commodore SS racer the same month.
The VK SS Group A sold last night went to an anonymous bidder from Strathmore, Victoria for exactly $1,057,509 (plus a 7.5 per cent auction fee) after 12 million-dollar bid within 32 hours of the end of the five-day auction.
In original condition with 77,539km under its belt, the Group A ‘Blue Meanie’ was number 05 – the famous racing number of the man that once owned it – of 500 built.
Signed by Brock, the VK SS was the first and arguably best of four Group A models produced by Holden, co-inciding with the adoption of international Group A rules for the Australian Touring Car Championship from 1985.
Grays Online said the car was Brock’s personal vehicle, still belonged to the same family that he sold it to within months of its production in April 1985, and has never been repainted or restored.
Sold unregistered by a dealer in Salter Point, West Australia, the iconic VK come with an HDT bodykit, trademark Formula Blue paint, light blue interior, white Aero wheels and a 4.9-litre V8 with four-speed manual transmission.
Wearing a '005/500' plaque on its dashboard, it was accompanied by paperwork confirming its authenticity, including a letter from Brock’s long-time HDT teammate, the late John Harvey.
