Nissan has teased a tough, mud-plugging concept dubbed the Nissan X-TRAIL Crawler it plans to unveil at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12.
Based on the current Nissan X-TRAIL mid-size SUV, the shadowy teaser image shows how engineers have fitted a high-lift suspension kit, knobbly all-terrain tyres, smaller wheels and what looks like a steel front bumper with LED light bar embedded.
Up top, there’s a chunky roof rack with another row of LED lamps plus two storage boxes.
A closer look also reveals additional underbody armour and flared wheel-arches to accommodate the wider rubber.
According to Nissan, the X-TRAIL Crawler has been built for rock-crawling and steep and rough terrain.
There’s no word yet on whether the Japanese car-maker is plotting a production version to rival more capable SUVs like the Land Rover Defender.
Other highlights of Nissan’s Tokyo Auto Salon offering include a Caravan-based Disaster Mobile-Hub, complete with a huge roof rack (and steps), winch and all-terrain tyres designed to tackle the fall-out from an earthquake or hurricane.
Also sharing the stand is a Micra hatch customised for a pastry chef and a tiny kei-car Roox that’s been created in partnership with Japanese fashion brand Beams.
Nissan Motorsports and bespoke division Autech will also reveal sportier versions of the X-TRAIL that’s claimed to benefit from exterior and interior updates.
