Toyota has released two shadowy teasers of faster versions of both the Toyota GR Yaris and new-generation Toyota GR 86 coupe ahead of their unveiling at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 14.
Beginning with the faster Toyota GR Yaris, the darkened image released over the weekend suggests that the Japanese car-maker is finally primed to introduce the high-performance GRMN version of the Yaris that was seen testing last year at the Nurburgring.
The image reveals that the show car will get a new front-end design and a large downforce-boosting rear wing.
The GRMN Yaris is believed to have undergone a regime of weight-saving that includes the introduction of lightweight parts like the new bonnet that's thought to be made of carbon-fibre and features a large air intake.
There's no word on how much weight will be saved, but the GR Yaris is also expected to offer a tuned version of the standard car's turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine that will see a healthy power boost over the 200kW the stock GR Yaris produces.
We predict around 225kW and 400Nm with little more than an ECU tweak and a free-flowing exhaust.
Factor in the diet and uprated engine and it's thought the 0-100km/h time will fall considerably from the regular car's 5.2 seconds. Top speed will also climb from 230km/h to at least 250km/h.
The hotter GRMN version, which stands for Gazoo Racing Meisters of the Nurburgring, will also bag a lower ride height and track-focused rubber that hints at a completely retuned suspension set-up tailored for circuit work.
Unveiled alongside the extreme version of the GR Yaris is thought to be a new GT3 concept based on the latest GR 86 concept that has been created to do battle with GT3 versions of the Porsche 911, Lamborghini Huracan, Bentley Continental GT and Ferrari 488.
