F1 gets new AMG
Formula One has a new safety car -- a 6.3-litre Mercedes AMG coupe.Mercedes-Benz AMG has rolled out a new F1 safety car -- a big-bore V8 coupe.
Australian motorsport enthusiasts will be among the first to see the new vehicle which is based on the upcoming CLK 63 AMG. The car will will perform the role of official Safety Car during the 2006 F1 season including the Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne.
Featuring a 354kW naturally-aspirated AMG-modified V8 engine, the ultra-quick coupe is said to be 150kg lighter than standard offering thanks to composite panels including bonnet, front wings and doors.
Though still running the standard AMG Speedshift 7G-tronic automatic transmission, for its F1 role, the CLK 63 gets a throaty race exhaust.
Suspension is also bespoke and multiadjustable. Track has been increased front and rear (70/60mm) and the car rolls on wide forged 19-inch AMG alloys. Brakes are upgraded with the front set-up boasting 390-millimetre drilled and vented composite discs with six-piston calipers.
The car will be piloted by former DTM driver, Bernd Mayländer.
Mercedes-AMG has been supplying the Formula One safety car continuously for the past ten years.
