F1 star inspires BMW celebs at Sandown
F1 champ Jacques Villeneuve turned out some laps of Sandown Raceway early this week.In Melbourne for this weekend's Australian F1 Grand Prix, Villeneuve and 26 celebrity drivers took to the famous race track on Monday in preparation for the big event at Albert Park.
Sandown International Raceway in Melbourne's south-east is BMW's chosen track for driver training events. A team of expert instructors including Geoff and David Brabham will take the BMW Celebrity racers through their paces at Sandown for a week before heading to the F1 event as a support act.
Celebrity racers including Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nikki Hudson (captain of the Hockeyroos), AFL star Alastair Lynch, champion jockey Damien Oliver and US motocross champion, Carey Hart all lapped the Sandown Raceway at speeds in excess of 230km/h. The celebrities will take to the Albert Park race track, each in a BMW 120i.
BMW is also supplying an M6 as Course Car for the Australian F1 support races this year. According to BMW the M6 is a comprehensively re-engineered version of the 6 Series Coupé, previously seen as the support race Course Car in 2004 and 2005. A selection of high-performance BMW vehicles will be in use during the event, including the V10-powered M5 Sedan, V8 powered 550i Sedan and several 7 Series limousines.
