Facelifted 2025 Volvo XC90 hybrid primed for September 4 debut

Big update on the way for Volvo’s three-row SUV, headlined by a shift to hybrid powertrains

The overhauled 2025 Volvo XC90 has been teased ahead of its official debut on September 4, with the Swedish brand confirming it will be offered with a full range of electrified powertrains alongside the battery-electric EX90.

Very few details have been shared beyond the key adoption of hybrid technology, but it’s thought the facelifted model will live on until 2030 (when Volvo goes all EV), meaning the second-gen XC90 will be 15 years old by the time it’s retired.

To ensure it remains relevant among its younger competition, expect the facelift to bring EX90-inspired design cues and a radically different interior with a larger floating display, fewer buttons and more premium materials.

The powertrains are likely to retain the familiar 2.0-litre turbo-petrol internal combustion element but feature more powerful electric motors and larger battery packs to ensure the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE rival has an all-electric range of at least 100km.

Volvo said “there might be a surprise or two” for viewers in the official reveal livestream, suggesting there might be a high-performance concept or a more luxurious four-seat version on the way.
