The last in a long line of locally-built Falcon and Territory models will be the most technologically advanced yet. Ford Australia has today revealed that both the FG X-series Falcon and SZ Mark II Territory will receive Ford's Wi-Fi-enabled SYNC2 infotainment technology and all-new Emergency Assistance technologies – as per those now found in Fiesta, EcoSport and Kuga models – as standard across the range. That range will include six Falcon variants and five Falcon Ute models, with the nameplates from the current FG series carried over. Likewise, the Territory SUV will remain a three-variant proposition, as per the current range.
For Falcon sedan, the familiar Falcon, Falcon G6E, Falcon G6E Turbo, XR6, XR6 Turbo and (revived) XR8 badges will again adorn the boot lid. The Falcon G6 variant will be absorbed by running changes to the base-grade 'Falcon'.
The Falcon Ute line-up has been likewise streamlined with Falcon Cab-Chassis and Styleside variants topped by XR6 Cab Chassis and Styleside and range-topping XR6 Turbo Styleside. There will not be an eight-cylinder offering in the last Falcon Ute, with Ford stating simply that "the Falcon sedan is the only locally built large car available with four, six and V8 powertrains, as well as a turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine and EcoLPi six-cylinder engine".
Ford's entry grade Falcon and Falcon G6E variants will be recognised by a new front fascia featuring trapezoidal grille, new projector-style headlights, LED tail-lights, new door handles and wing mirrors, remoulded body-colour bumpers and model-dependent alloy wheels ranging in size from 16 to 18 inches shod with low-rolling resistance Michelin tyres.
XR6 and XR6 Turbo variants will be fitted with 18 and 19-inch alloy wheels respectively, and will also receive unique 'W' shaped LED running lamps, model-specific bumpers, grille and foglights, sports instrumentation, an upgraded six-speaker audio system, rain-sensing wipers and perforated black leather-bound steering wheel in addition to those features found on the current model.
'XR' utility models will be specified largely as for the sedan counterparts, with entry-spec Falcon Ute variants the only "stripped down" models in the range. These are fitted with 16-inch steel wheels (in place of the alloy wheels found on sedan variants), single-zone climate control, body-coloured bumpers, four-way powered driver's seat, two-speaker audio system with single-CD, cruise control, Bluetooth and USB integration.
All variants will receive front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera with guidelines and (manual) zoom function and the high-resolution SYNC2 infotainment system complete with 8.0-inch colour touchscreen and simplified "One Shot" navigation presets. Ford says it has also worked to improve the system's voice recognition software, while also ensuring the system is compatible with a greater range of smartphones and media players. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming is of course included, as is DAB+ digital radio and Wi-Fi hotspot for the first (and last) time.
As noted earlier, Ford will offer a choice of three powertrain options, depending on variant, all of which have featured previously in FG-series variants. These include the 179kW/ 353Nm 2.0-litre EcoBoost TiVCT four-cylinder unit, Ford's Aussie-built 195kW/391Nm 4.0-litre DOHC direct-injected VCT six, a gas-fed EcoLPI six-cylinder of the same capacity but making 198kW and 409Nm, and a turbocharged petrol variant making 270kW and 533Nm. XR8 sedan models will arrive with the former FPV supercharged 5.0-litre V8 developing an expected 335kW and 570Nm.
A choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions is available, depending on variant, however LPG-powered models are not offered with the manual gearbox. Control blade IRS suspension and a new Sports Luxury tune will also be available, and are variant specific.
Safety equipment remains largely unchanged, with the last Falcon expected to receive the same five-star ANCAP rating as the outgoing model.
A ten-colour paint palette introduces Fine Alloy optionally on Falcon G6E, the other nine including Winter White (solid), Lightning Strike, Smoke, Vanish, Silhouette, Archon Bronze, Kinetic, Emperor and Victory Gold.
For Territory variants the equipment levels are quite similar to those of the Falcon. Front and rear parking sensors, Emergency Assistance, rear-view camera, 8.0-inch SYNC2 touchscreen with voice recognition, digital radio with Bluetooth and dual USB ports, Wi-Fi hotspot and a new selection of alloy wheels are standard across the range, while high-grade Titanium models add rain-sensing wipers [all features listed are in addition to those found on the current SZ-series Territory range].
Engine choices remain unaltered with the 2.7-litre Land Rover-sourced V6 TDCi and 4.0-litre 'Aussie' six-cylinder petrol offered across the three-model line-up. The diesel unit is offered in conjunction with the choice of rear- and all-wheel drive while the petrol model remains rear-wheel drive only.
Like the Falcon, the new Territory receives a new front fascia with trapezoidal grille, but adds a 'robust' skid plate and rectangular foglights. Safety equipment remains identical, while the colour palette changes to a choice of eight: Winter White (solid), Silhouette, Lightning Strike, Vanish, Archon Bronze, Smoke, Fine Alloy (new) and Emperor.
Full pricing details will be announced closer to the model's local launch in November this year.
