Recent dramatic reports in the local media have highlighted a durability problem experienced in a small number of BA and BF Falcons. Ford puts the number of vehicles affected at 0.5 per cent of production.
High mileage, hard driving and rough roads are the three principal factors complicit in premature degradation of the rear brake hoses for Ford's BA and BF Falcons. According to Ford, any one of the three factors or all of them may contribute to loss of brake fluid from the rear lines. Symptoms are a soft, spongey brake pedal and the brake warning light illuminating.
Ford estimates approximately 1000 vehicles out of the 200,000 built are affected and brake hoses will be inspected and replaced by Ford dealers as part of a "special servicing program".
According to Ford spokesman, Ed Finn, 70 per cent of the Falcon's braking is done through the front wheels, which are braked independently of the rear, so the brake hose vulnerability is unlikely to result in a catastrophic brake failure. For this reason, the Falcon still meets its statutory obligations and Ford has not issued a recall.
Ford is confident that the diagnosis of the problem is correct and owners need not be unduly concerned.
