Fast Volkswagen ID.4 GTX set for April 28 debut
High-performance ID SUV to get twin motors, all-wheel drive and bespoke chassis tuneVolkswagen has announced it will launch its first high-performance GTX derivative of the pure-electric Volkswagen ID.4 on April 28.
Set to be the first in a line of ID GTX models, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is expected to feature a dual-motor all-wheel drive pure-electric powertrain that will produce around 225kW.
No details have been released yet, but it's thought the fastest ID.4 SUV yet should be capable of a 6.0-second 0-100km/h sprint, although top speed could still be limited to 160km/h.
It's expected the ID.4 GTX will come with the bigger 77kWh battery pack that provides a 520km range with the regular model's single 150kW electric motor.
Externally, the GTX will introduce overtly sportier styling that should hint at the add-ons currently used on the GTI version of the Volkswagen Golf.
Think larger wheels, side skirts, a deeper front splitter and a subtle rear spoiler that will no doubt impact on range but add stability at high speeds.
Inside, expect more heavily bolstered seats and sportier tartan trim and bespoke graphics for the digital instrument cluster.
As well as more power, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX will get a bespoke suspension tune that will see it sit lower to the ground with a wider front and rear track that will boost cornering grip and agility.
New tech includes a performance all-wheel drive system that will offer a 'Traction' drive mode. The system will carefully manage torque to the front axle, although most of the time the ID.4 GTX is expected to have rear-biased handling.
A drift mode could also be part of the ID.4 GTX's dynamic armoury.
On sale in Europe later in 2021, the ID.4 GTX is set to be joined by a Volkswagen ID.5 SUV-coupe later this year that will also boast a GTX version.
Originally, Volkswagen was believed to be planning a faster GTX version of the ID.3 hatch, but those plans have now thought to have been shelved by senior VW execs after redefining the new electric GTX as an all-wheel drive performance sub-brand.
Currently the ID.3 can't package all-wheel drive, although a more powerful ID.3 R version is still rumoured to be in the pipeline.
