Faster 2024 Volkswagen Golf R teased
VW provides first glimpse of heavily upgraded high-performance Golf R ahead of mid-year debutVW has released its first teaser of the heavily upgraded 2024 Volkswagen Golf R ahead of its European launch around mid-year.
Set to be the quickest production Golf ever produced, the latest R-rated AWD flagship will benefit from the host of updates already announced for the Mk8.5 version of Volkswagen’s small car.
For now, no details have been released on what the new Golf R will be packing, but we do know it will continue to be offered as both a hatch and wagon, at least in Europe.
When it arrives in Australia, possibly before the end of this year, the facelifted Mk8.5 Golf’s overhauled cabin will include a huge 12.9-inch infotainment system that finally includes backlit sliders missing on the current model.
Of course, while the multimedia improvements will be welcome, most buyers will be far more interested in what’s occurred under the bonnet of the Golf R.
Like the latest 195kW (+15kW) Golf GTI that was unwrapped last week, it’s expected the 2024 Volkswagen Golf R will also get a power-up.
The current 235kW and 400Nm output is set to increase to somewhere around the 245kW/420Nm mark pumped out by the limited VW Golf R 20.
With that level of power and torque, plus revised software used for controlling the all-wheel drive system and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, the refreshed Golf R should be capable of a 0-100km/h dash of less than 4.5 seconds, making it at least 0.1sec quicker than benchmark Golf R 20.
Top speed is likely to exceed 270km/h, although Volkswagen is likely to impose a 250km/h speed limiter.
Already spotted hotlapping the Nurburgring, the new Golf R will sport a unique front bumper that was easily identified under the engineering development car’s camouflage.
Also expect a new rear bumper, large tailgate spoiler and diffuser, plus lightweight alloy wheels and a bigger brake package.
New chassis tech set to be introduced on the latest Golf R should include an updated version of the advanced torque vectoring system currently employed.
It’s not known if engineers have been tempted to include a drift mode on the 2024 VW Golf R.
The current Golf R hatch is priced at $68,990 plus on-road costs, with wagon starting $3000 upstream.
