Faster 245kW Volkswagen Golf R Plus happening

Golf Mk8 British owner's manual reveals more powerful 245kW Golf R variant is on its way

An even hotter version of the Volkswagen Golf R has been accidentally confirmed with the British owner's manual for the Mk8 Golf listing a more powerful variant of the flagship hot hatch.

Discovered by Youtuber Volkswizard, if you flick to page 347 of the manual a variant of the Volkswagen Golf R is listed that suggests a version with 245kW and 420Nm will soon be available.

That's 10kW more than the current Golf R.

The torque figure is the same 420Nm the base Golf R musters, which hints that either the six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic isn't able to handle any more.

Despite listed as having a DNFF engine code, it's almost certain the more powerful Volkswagen Golf R, which could carry the 'Plus' tag, still gets a modified version of the EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that powers both the standard Golf R and the rest of the Golf GTI range.

Apart from the engine output, there were no other juicy details revealed about the hotter R-rated Golf, but it's safe to say with the extra power the more powerful version should be capable of shaving a few tenths off the 4.7 seconds it takes for the regular R to hit 100km/h.

Top speed of the Golf R with the performance pack fitted could also rise from 270km/h to around 280km/h.

Expected to be introduced in Europe later this year, the new Volkswagen Golf R Plus could arrive in Australia early in 2022 just as first deliveries of the standard car commence.

It's not yet known how Volkswagen plans to position the more powerful Golf R Plus. One theory is it could be to distance it from the standard R by giving it a more hard-core bent.

That could include radical weight-saving measures that could even go as far as seeing the rear seats ditched.
