Perth auto-tech company gets federal grant to help Chinese car maker 'green up'Perth company Orbital Australia has received a federal government grant to help fulfil a deal selling its green engine technologies to one of China's largest car makers.
Orbital was awarded the $440,413 grant from the Green Car Innovation Fund to develop clean-burn engine management systems for Chinese car maker Changan Automobile.
Orbital will develop its air-assisted FlexDI direct injection technology to help Changan ready its four-cylinder petrol burner for compliance with upcoming Chinese fuel economy standards.
China's fourth-largest automaker, Changan chalked up sales of more than 1.8 million last year. The company expects sales to rise to around 2.2 million units in 2010.
The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research set up the $1.3 billion Green Car Innovation Fund to assist Australian industry in researching and developing local technologies to help 'green up' passenger car engines, and push them to commercial viability in local and overseas markets.
In announcing Orbital's grant, Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr (pictured) said the deal is important in strengthening ties with the world's largest auto making country, creating local jobs and reducing global fuel consumption and GHG emissions.
Selling Australian-made automotive products into China and other major markets is an important goal for his government, he said: "The Australian automotive industry, and companies such as Orbital, has a vital role to play in developing innovative systems and components for green cars worldwide.
"Through programs such as the Green Car Innovation Fund, this role is being realised."
