Ferrari has unveiled its light-weight 458 Challenge model at the company's annual dealer meeting in Maranello, Italy.
The Challenge is based on Ferrari's 458 Italia, but is equipped with added performance gear including a modified F1-style dual-clutch transmission, F1-Trac wet and dry traction control system and E-Diff electronically controlled (rear) differential for better drive from the apex.
Stiffer race suspension sees solid aluminium bushing, firmer springs and single-rate shock absorbers added to the mix while stopping power comes courtesy of high performance Brembo CCM2 brakes (a la 599XX), under centre-nut 19-inch wheels and Pirelli tyres.
Thinner body panels, Lexan (plastic) windows and the extensive use of carbon fibre components see weight reduced significantly, and although Ferrari wouldn't comment on the exact after-diet figure, we'd estimate a 60-100kg saving over the 1380kg Italia.
Motivation comes via a 4.5-litre V8 which produces output figures totalling 419kW/540Nm.
Ferrari say the 458 Challenge is capable of lapping its Fiorano test track in 1'16.5", a whole two seconds quicker than the F430 Challenge. Equally impressive, the 458 Challenge can generate 1.6G of lateral grip in corners.
Ferrari's press release says the 458 Challenge is "extremely responsive, with great performance and superb handling" – perhaps the understatement of the year. All we know is, we want one Down Under, and with next year's Ferrari Challenge being expanded to include a new Asia-Pacific series, we might just get our wish.
The new berlinetta will flank the F430 Challenge in the 2011 Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli season to become the fifth model used by the Prancing Horse-brand in the one-make championship.
