The new Ferrari 458 Italia has joined the automotive world's most wanted list.
Before the first car has reached customer hands Ferrari has revealed the worldwide waiting list extends to two years. Ferrari in Australia is hoping to get a handful of cars before the end of 2010, with the first one due to arrive mid-year.
"Our first cars were ordered by our most loyal customers up to two years ago, before anyone knew what the car looked like or what engine it would have," said Ferrari Australia spokesman Edward Rowe.
"If you order a car today it would take the best part of two years to take delivery."
Ferrari is famous for keeping even its famous customers waiting. The boss of Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, once described buying a Ferrari as like courting a woman. There should be two years of anticipation before ultimately the relationship is consummated, so the saying goes.
The new Ferrari 458 is the first all-new sports car from the Italian maker in 10 years, with an all-new chassis, engine, transmission and body.
Price is yet to be announced but the car maker has said it will cost 10 per cent more than the F430 it replaces, putting estimates at close to $500,000 before dealer charges and on-road costs.
