A motor show with its own built-in racetrack is not something you see every day. But, then again, Bologna in Italy is not the sort of place that is familiar with the everyday.
Located in the breeding grounds of Italian car-maker Ferrari, the Bologna motor show is an event where Italian traditions prevail, where high-performance cars, the smell of oily rags and motorsport are national symbols.
What better place for Ferrari to reveal the Evolution version of its flagship 599XX. Billed as an extreme, non road-going sports car, the front-mid-engined car is “available to clients participating in the track-based research and development programme for the 2012-2013 seasons.”
With more power (up to 559kW) and weighing 35kg less than before, the 599XX Evolution gets latest-technology aerodynamics including an active tear wing that regulates the downforce between front and rear axles according to the needs of the moment.
Parameters such as steering wheel angle, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration and vehicle speed are considered when the exact position of the wing is determined. According to Ferrari, this enables the 599XX to automatically adjust front/rear downforce balance for any given corner.
The car also gets a new aerodynamics package, complete with a modified front splitter and a new rear diffuser which, in combination with other new aero elements, is able to exert as much as 440kg of downforce when required.
The normally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 engine has been bumped by around 37kW to 559kW at 9000rpm, while torque has been increased to 700Nm. All this is augmented by a slightly lower final drive ratio, plus the 35kg reduction in weight, to give swifter acceleration.
The company says the 599XX Evolution is able to lap its Fiorano test track in an astonishing 1 minute and 15 seconds - which is within 15 seconds of lap times recorded by some Ferrari F1 racecars.
The Ferrari 599 debuted as the GTB Fiorano model at the 2006 Geneva motor show, when the 6.0-litre V12 produced 456kW and 608Nm.
