Ferrari California convertible makes its second world appearance in Sydney

AIMS PREVIEW: Ferrari's latest has crossed the Pacific to wow Aussie audiences with its striking good looks

The Australian International Motor Show will be the venue for the second public appearance of the new Ferrari California convertible when doors to the Darling Harbour Convention Centre open tomorrow.

Ferrari importer Ateco Automotive has brought the hardtop convertible here directly from Hollywood, where it was presented to American Ferrari owners. It uses Ferrari's all-new direct-injection 4.3-litre V8 developing 343kW and mounted in what the Maranello marque describes as a "mid-front" configuration -- that is, set back further than normal in the engine bay for improved front-rear weight balance. The company says it is using this configuration for the first time in its history.

Ferrari doesn't mention fuel consumption, but does reveal that CO2 emissions have been measured at 310g/km.

The V8 drives through a seven-speed dual-clutch sequential manual transmission and reaches 100km/h from a standstill in "less than four seconds."

Talking about the new Ferrari California's interior, the company says "In addition to sporting the marque's classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari's own skilled artisans. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, together with optimised aerodynamics ensure that this is a highly ergonomic and enjoyable car to drive regardless of whether the top is up or down."

The California convertible fits into a range including the close-to $800,000 612 Scaglietti at one end and the $400,000-plus F430 Coupe at the other.

Ferrari will announce further details, plus pricing, before deliveries of the California convertible commence in mid 2009.
