Ferrari recalls 840 cars in Australia

Suspect fluid resonator needs replacing to prevent brake failure in Ferrari 458 and 488 models sold over a decade

Ferrari Australia has issued a product safety recall for all versions of its Ferrari 458, including the Speciale, as well as the 488 GTB and 488 Spider due to concerns of a potential brake failure.

The fault has been traced back to an ill-designed brake fluid reservoir cap which could hinder the ventilation of the braking system and potentially cause “a reduction in the vehicle’s braking ability”.

According to the recall notice, such a fault “may increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users”.

It could also prove lethal on the track given that’s where the braking system is put under the heaviest loads as drivers haul their six-figure supercars up from the immense speeds all the effected models are capable of.

For reference, this recall effects the 458 Italia, 458 Spider, 458 Speciale, 458 Speciale A, 488 GTB and 488 Spider, spanning the 2010-2019 model years.

In total, 840 individual vehicles are affected.

The Prancing Horse’s local division has urged owners to contact their preferred Ferrari dealership or Ferrari Australia itself to arrange for a replacement cap to be installed and receive a software update to better monitor brake fluid levels, all free of charge.

A complete list of effected VINs can be found here.

This is the fourth time in seven years local Ferrari 458s have been recalled and the third time in three years for the 488, with previous instances involving the Takata airbag saga, a defective fuel vapour separator and faulty TRW airbag electronic control unit.
