F430 engine powers boat to new class speed records

A septagenarian named Eugenio Molinari has set his 71st speed record in a boat. 'Septagenarian' - that's like...a seventy-year old, isn't it?

Molinari is 71, so his records equal his age. How does he keep doing it?

Having an engine from a Ferrari F430 in his boat helps.

Molinari set the new records in Endurance Group B class S1 and S2 categories. These apply to 'Gran Turismo' boats weighing at least 1100kg (S1) or at least 1450kg with ballast (S2).

For the record attempts, the engine had been modified from standard to suit the marine application. Air intake, exhaust and engine management were all revised.

Cooling was taken care of by a heat exchanger which was 'liquid-to-liquid', rather than the conventional 'air-to-liquid' systems used in cars. A pump with its own drive circulated water to the heat exchanger and exhaust to cool the latter as well as the liquid coolant in the engine's water jacket.
