Slick pit work by his Ferrari team took Michael Schumacher to victory over arch rival Fernando Alonso in the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring.
It was a titanic battle as Alonso won the start but Schumacher was always close at hand and a slick pit stop on lap 41 gave the German the break that lasted until the chequered flag.
Schumacher's teammate Felipe Massa was third; his best ever grand prix finish.
In a race of high attrition several top runners failed to finish including Australian Mark Webber, whose Williams Cosworth retired on lap 13 with hydraulic failure.
Jenson Button once again failed to finish, frustrating both the Englishman and his army of sympathetic media supporters led by ITV commentators Martin Brundle and James Allen. Ralf Schumacher in the Toyota and Tacoma Sato's Super Aguri Honda went out late in the race as did Juan Pablo Montoya in the McLaren Mercedes.
After the race a delighted Schumacher paid tribute to his team. "I think the result shows we are back, with car, engine, tyres and fuel all working superbly."
Barry Morocco, driving a Lancer Evo VIII, finished second in each of three heats but won the round after his teammate Garry Holt was excluded from the third race for a car ride-height technical infringement.
Holt had won races one and two and looked set for a clean-sweep of the weekend before the exclusion. Defending champion Peter Floyd in an HSV GTS won race three.
AMRS
Second-generation racer George Miedecke took out his first-ever race win and gave an historic victory to Hyundai when he drove his Hyundai Tiburon to an outright win in wet conditions in race one of the AMRS Production Touring Car Championship at Winton Motor Raceway.
Driving the car in which his famous father, Andrew had just completed the Targa Tasmania, Miedecke was brilliant in the wet to beat the faster BMW 130s of Luke Searle and Peter Kelly.
Despite his wet weather heroics it was Kelly who took out the weekend with the win in the day's second race before finishing runner-up to Searle in race three.
