Fiat 500 iPad app

Fiat is underlining its tech-savviness with a new iPad App for the upcoming, super-efficient 500 TwinAir engine that explains all one needs to know, and probably more, about the new two-cylinder.

The application, which can be downloaded from the Apple Store under “thefiat500twinair”, details not just the intricacies of the new engine but also provides a history of the technology that led to its development. There’s also a driving simulator to experience what it’s like to be behind the wheel of the TwinAir 500.

Two navigation modes are offered: regular browsing via a series of tiles, or a more funky mode combining the 3D engine and an interactive menu.

The 63kW/145Nm turbocharged two-cylinder is part of Fiat’s micro-engine family and has a capacity of 875cc. It uses electro-hydraulic valve management, a variable-vane turbo and low-friction technology. The company says the new engine outperforms conventional 1.4-litre four-cylinder engines while returning significantly better fuel economy and emissions figures.

Fiat claims the TwinAir two-cylinder will take the 500 to 100km/h in 11 seconds. It returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 3.6L/100km, along with a sub-100g/km CO2 figure of 92g/km when equipped with the optional robotised Dualogic transmission. In manual form it outputs 95g/km.

The Fiat 500 TwinAir is due to be launched in the next few weeks, with pricing and other details to be announced at launch.

Fiat continues to head the field in terms of emissions with Europe’s lowest average CO2 values of cars sold in the first half of 2010. In this period, Fiat’s average across its range was 123.5g/km.
