Fiat unveils baby Mobi SUV

Tiny Mobi to rival Renault Kwid, but it's unlikely ever to be sold outside emerging markets

Fiat has revealed its new miniature SUV that’s made in India and will be sold in other emerging markets like Brazil.

It’s not known what car the small SUV -- called the Mobi -- is based on but it’s thought it could be underpinned by the Fiat Panda.

Featuring a raised ride height, the small Renault Kwid rival gets black plastic wheel-arches to give the impression it’s a tough off-roader but it’s unlikely, on cost grounds, to ever come equipped with the Panda 4x4’s all-wheel drive hardware.

For the Brazilian market there’s just one engine option -- a 54kW/93Nm 1.0-litre four-cylinder petrol that produces fractionally more power if it’s run on pure ethanol (75kW/97Nm).

Against the clock, Fiat Brazil claims the Mobi takes 14.3 seconds to reach 100km/h and tops out at 153km/h.

Pricing in the Brazilian market is from around $11,500.
