Field of 350 for Targa

Australia's premier tarmac rally has secured a record number of entries for the 17th running of the event

Targa Tasmania is the event that started the craze for tarmac rallying in Australia.

In this, its 17th year, the five-day event has attracted 350 entries from far afield as America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

This year's field betters the previous record from 2000, when 299 cars entered the event, held over six days, rather than the five days of subsequent events.

Organisers attribute the larger field in part to the establishment of a 'Rookie Rallye' class, which provides a lower echelon entrée to the event. 42 entrants for this years event are participating in this class. By far the fastest growing category in the event is the 'Classic' category, which has expanded from 76 in 2007 to 120 entries for this year.

"The course is great. We have managed to trim 300 kilometres off the overall distance while increasing competitive kilometres to record levels," said event director, Mark Perry.

"We had to centralise it as there was a lot of travel, a lot of accommodation and it made Targa logistically hard to do. It was all in the vision of having a viable event in five to ten years time and making it easier for everyone."

Competitors will depart from Launceston on April 15 and conclude the event in Hobart on April 20.
