Final edition Polestar 1 coupe makes debut

Volvo sister brand Polestar has confirmed it will end production of its plug-in hybrid Polestar 1 coupe later this year with a final run of 25 limited-edition models.

The final run of cars all come in a bespoke matte gold exterior paint colour that's also used for the large brake callipers.

Inside, there's yet more gold, this time for stitches used for the upholstery in the luxurious interior.

First launched back in 2019, the Polestar 1 was the Sino-Swedish brand's first standalone model.

It's powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that drives the front axle, while a pair of electric motors drive the rear wheels to provide all-wheel drive.

Total power is an impressive 450kW and 1000Nm of torque – enough to haul the big, heavy coupe to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds.

Better still, thanks to its 34kWh battery, it could cover up to 124km on pure-electric power alone on the strictest WLTP test cycle.

Produced in Chengdu, China, the 1 employs exotic carbon-fibre for its bonnet, boot lid, fenders, doors and entire roof structure, helping the big Polestar boast impressive torsional stiffness.

When it was introduced, it was pitched as an electrified rival to cars like the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door or the Bentley Continental GT.

That also explains its lofty price tag, with the Volvo 1 priced from around $200,000 in Europe.

Over its three-year lifespan Polestar hoped to sell 1500 examples of the Polestar 1, but last year the brand shifted just 65 cars in Europe, suggesting it might have fallen short of that modest 500-per-year target over its lifetime.

Barring the Polestar 1 for Australian buyers, meanwhile, wasn't the luxury coupe's cost, nor its high-tech electrified engine, but the fact it was only developed for left-hand drive.

Since its creation, Polestar has switched its decision to be an electrified brand to now becoming a full pure-electric car-maker.

Already confirmed to launch in Australia, the first models to go on sale here will be three variants of the car-maker's second model, the battery-powered Polestar 2 that should land here in early 2022.
