There's an end in sight for Peter Watson, the clay modeller who has been hard at work for four months bringing to life his homage to Ford production staff at Broadmeadows and Geelong.
"I wanted to show the faces behind the Falcon," Watson was quoted saying in a press release. "I thought it would be a fitting celebration piece to all the personnel who literally bolt the car together on the production line. The biggest challenge was trying to do justice to every worker who volunteered to be part of the project."
Reassembled from two bodies in white that were superfluous to needs, the Falcon art car has been wrapped in vinyl featuring the faces of the Ford staff. Watson welcomed the fact the pre-production shells had been saved from destruction for his pet project.
"Otherwise they would have been scrapped," Watson said. "I love the idea of recycling materials for artistic purposes."
The car will go on display at the 'Outside the Oval' exhibition, to be held this weekend at the 1000 Pound Bend Gallery in Melbourne's Little Lonsdale Street. Both body shells were acquired with the assistance of Ford staff at the You Yangs proving ground
Aimed at raising money for juvenile diabetes, the exhibition also provides the public with an opportunity to get a close-up look at the new Falcon for the first time, in XR8 specification. It's a real Ford fest for blue oval fans, and features numerous artworks related to the brand – many for sale.
The Falcon art car will take part in subsequent Ford promotional events. 'Outside the Oval' supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – a charity Ford has backed from as long ago as 1983, when the company hosted a fundraising walk in its hometown, Michigan.
Last year, Ford Australia raised over $25,000 for the charity.
