A nationwide product safety recall notice has been issued for almost 9000 examples of the Hyundai Santa Fe due to fears a manufacturing fault could cause them to catch fire, even when parked.
The recall notice affects a total of 8779 previous-generation (DM-series) Santa Fe vehicles built between 2015 and 2017.
Hyundai says all variants and powertrains – both petrol and turbo-diesel – of the popular South Korean-made large SUV are at risk due to a manufacturing problem with a brake system component.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the circuit board in the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) module may short circuit when the components are exposed to moisture,” says the recall notice.
As a result, Hyundai says there’s a risk the vehicle could catch fire – even when turned off – but adds that the potential fault won’t affect the functioning of the vehicle’s brakes.
Hyundai Australia is advising the owners of affected vehicles (see a list of affected VINs below) to park in an open space away from flammable materials and structures (ie: not in a garage).
“If your vehicle displays an engine warning light, please stop driving and contact your local Hyundai dealer,” said the car-maker, which will contact the owners of affected vehicles to organise free inspection and repair where required.
