First A90 Toyota Supra to be auctioned

Anticipation for all-new Supra sports car builds as US auction house snaffles first vehicle

The price of the born-again Toyota Supra is not even known yet, which makes it hard to speculate what the first A90 sports car will sell for when it goes under the hammer in Arizona on January 19.

The first new-generation Toyota Supra to roll off the line will be sold by Barrett-Jackson Auctions a few days after the reincarnated sports coupe’s world premiere at the 2019 Detroit motor show on January 14.

The vehicle will have matt-grey exterior paint, matt-black wheels, red mirror caps and bold crimson-coloured interior leather seats and trim.

All proceeds from the auction will go to the American Heart Foundation.

Pricing for the new fifth-generation Toyota Supra is speculative at present, with talk of prices starting from about $70,000 to $80,000 in Australia, so perhaps around $US40,000 in North America.

What people are willing to pay for the first A90 Supra, however, is anyone's guess and the price could easily reach six figures.

As well as the special paintwork and interior, the first A90 Toyota Supra will also feature the VIN 20201 and a carbon-fibre interior badge that denotes its build number.

The auctioneers have also said there will be "additional exclusive experiences" included.

Sales of the Toyota sports car begin in the US in the first half of 2019, with Aussie customers gaining access from the third quarter, meaning next July at the earliest.

Built in Austria and co-developed with BMW, the compact new Toyota Supra features 50/50 weight distribution, a shorter wheelbase than the 86, adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes, a BMW-sourced 3.0-litre turbo-petrol straight six offering around 250kW and 500Nm and 0-100km/h acceleration in around five seconds.

The reborn Supra coupe will also be the first Toyota launched under Toyota’s new GAZOO Racing (GR) performance sub-brand, which is also expected to present a Toyota Corolla hot hatch to rival the VW Golf GTI.

Stay tuned for more Supra news this week.
