First details of next-gen Volkswagen Tiguan revealed

MQB Evo platform, more electrification tech, bigger cabin and upgraded technology headline the fourth-generation Tiguan

Volkswagen has released the first concrete details of its upcoming 2024 VW Tiguan ahead of the new-generation mid-size SUV’s full global reveal later this year, including a new platform and an electric driving range of up to 100km for the plug-in hybrid variants.

The new platform in question is the MQB Evo architecture – as seen under the Mk8 VW Golf, Audi A3, Skoda Octavia, VW Caddy and Cupra Formentor – which will make the Tiguan much more receptive to electrification measures, especially plug-in hybrid technology.

Despite the modernised underpinnings, however, the new Tiguan will retain the same 2681mm wheelbase and 1939mm width as its predecessor, but the body will grow to 4551mm (+32mm) in length and stand 1659mm tall (with roof rails).

The marginal dimension increases will pair with a repackaged interior to yield an extra 33 litres of boot space behind the rear seats, elevating the boot capacity to 648L.

Other innovations coming to the fourth-generation Tiguan include new-generation adaptive dampers controlled via the same ‘vehicle dynamics manager’ as seen in the Golf GTI, mild hybridisation, optional IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights, completely redesigned interior and optional ‘ergoActive’ (massaging) front seats.

The all-new interior will be ruled by an equally new 15-inch touch-screen (variant dependant) housing all the usual infotainment goodies as well as the climate controls, all of which is run by a new-generation operation system promising crisper graphics and faster processing.

Complementing the brash new interface(s) are a swathe of new high-quality cabin materials and a comprehensively reworked centre console set to offer heaps more storage space, primarily by moving the gear selector up to the steering column as per the ID portfolio.

“State-of-the-art technology components interact perfectly in the MQB evo: a new generation of plug-in hybrid drives with electric ranges of up to 100km, probably the best active chassis control in its segment, premium interior quality and an equally new and intuitive infotainment system deliver what drivers expect from Volkswagen,” said VW board member for technical development Kai Grünitz.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will be revealed sometime in spring this year and will arrive Down Under in the second half of 2024.
