First Ferrari Sergio delivered

Just six of the super-special Ferraris have been built, and all are sold

The phrase "if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it" has never been more appropriate when it comes to the Ferrari Sergio. Just six of the super-rare roadsters have been built and although they're not as radical as the Pininfarina Sergio concept car – which featured custom helmets due to the lack of a roof or windscreen – they're still sold out.

The original Sergio concept car (also pictured) was released at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March, named after the late Sergio Pininfarina, whose design house penned the car. Pininfarina's idea was to deliver a radical roadster with no roof, no windscreen and custom-designed helmets to ensure clean aerodynamics.

The result, as the images show, is a car like few others, and although the production car is different to the concept it still retains a subtle retro look and will certainly stand out amid a sea of supercars.

And unlike the stunning FXX K revealed last week, this is a vehicle that that can actually be owned.

Ferrari's first Sergio roadster has been delivered to its owner, the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in the UAE, at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit during the Finali Mondiali Ferrari event, and it's clear from the official images that the Ferrari 458 Spider-based vehicle features a number of design cues inspired from the concept.

The front fascia and especially the low-slung 'floating' front spoiler and black section between the headlights are reminiscent of the wild concept car, while the rear air intakes are also blacked out like the show car's.

Mid-way along the car is a roll bar that combines safety and style, in "a modern take on the classic Ferrari flying buttress and negative rear window", says the company. Look closely and there's also small air intakes integrated into this section, which help cool clutch and gearbox oil.

At the rear the concept's central exhaust outlets were left in the 'too-hard' category so the Segrio gets twin pipes similar to those on the 458 Speciale. However, the black engine cover and brake light surrounds are tips of the hat to the concept.

Ferrari dubs the Sergio "an authentic open-top" that "explicitly references the track" and that can that can be seen in the deep rear diffuser, sleek profile and low stance. Powered by the 458 Spider's 4.5-litre naturally-aspirated V8, the car could quite conceivably be raced on the track too, although with only six in existence they're likely to be treated as collector's items.

The Ferrari Sergio generates more power than its donor car's 419kW and 540Nm of torque, with a quoted output of 445kW. Although torque levels haven't been revealed, the Italian exotic car-maker says the car will rip to 100km/h in three seconds flat -- considerably faster than the Spider (3.4). The gearbox is likely the same as the Spider's -- a seven-speed dual-clutch unit.

As with all bespoke Ferrari deliveries, many aspects of the vehicle -- particularly the interior -- are tailored to suit customer demands, so it's unlikely all six Sergios will be the same. Ferrari's 'Tailor Made' atelier in Maranello is where the cars are customised, offering "enormous freedom of choice in terms of colours, materials and finishes", says the company.

The vehicle pictured features a custom interior fit-out, with "the engine compartment actually hugging the backs of the seats" to enhance the visceral nature and feedback of the high-revving V8 engine.

Although it has some similarities with the 458 Spider, it is dominated by a bold black and red motif, and lavished with Alcantara and carbon-fibre. Like the concept car, this one also gets Sergio-specific forged wheels -- coloured gold with the diamond finish.
