A NASCAR team owner has purchased the first production version of Honda's born-again NSX supercar in North America for $US1.2 million ($A1.69m) at auction.
Rick Hendrick, an avid collector of ‘first-edition’ performance cars, paid the hefty amount – nearly 10 times the NSX’s $US157,800 expected US retail price – at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction on January 29.
The proceeds of NSX #001 — badged as an Acura in the US market, where it is also built — were donated to children’s charities including the Paediatric Brain Tumour Foundation in North Carolina, as well as Camp Southern Ground in Georgia.
Hendrick will add the hybrid NSX sports car to his impressive museum collection in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Honda's second-generation NSX super-coupe is slated to go on sale in Australia late this year, but that could push out to 2017 if global demand is strong.
