Renault has given us our first glimpse of the production-spec 2025 Renault 4 ahead of its full reveal at the Paris motor show on October 14.
Looking like it will stay true to the well-received Renault 4Ever Trophy concept of 2022, the new images showcase the Renault 4’s oblong-shaped grille, prominent tail-lights, rear spoiler, front fenders, tailgate and the fact the small SUV will come with a retractable fabric roof.
Other nods to the original include the trapezoid rear quarter windows, the vertical overriders and charming corrugated lower door design.
As part of its reboot for 2025, the R4 will be reimagined as a taller, high-riding take on the latest Renault 5, with the French brand confirming its latest baby SUV would measure in at 4.14 metres long – around the same size as the new Jeep Avenger – which would make it considerably longer then the R5 (3.92m).
Early indications are that the R4 will be offered both as a basic affordable small EV riding on steel wheels with a stripped-out cabin and a more expensive version with alloy wheels, roof rails and more overt 4x4-styling.
There might even be a version that mimics the 4Ever Trophy concept’s rugged styling.
The hole package will ride on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s ‘AmpR Small’ platform (formerly CMF-BEV), which shares as much as 70 per cent of parts from the CMF-B combustion platform.
Engineers claim the reusing of combustion platform parts reduces production costs by up to 30 per cent compared to the previous (bespoke) Renault Zoe.
Despite cutting costs, the new architecture doesn’t skimp on sophistication and features a multi-link rear suspension set-up for a better ride and agility, and could potentially see punchier dual-motor versions offered later.
The R4 will come with the choice of two battery packs: a 40kWh unit good for up to 300km of range and 80kW DC fast-charging, and a bigger 52kWh pack offering up to 400km of range and 100kW fast-charging capabilities.
Three power outputs will be on offer too – 70kW, 90kW and 110kW.
Images of the R4’s cabin have yet to be released but we expect it to adopt the R5 hatch’s twin-10.1-inch displays at the very least.
With production of the R4 set to kick-off in the same northern France factory as the R5 in the third quarter of 2025, European deliveries are expected to commence towards the end of next year, with sales Down Under expected in early 2026 – around a year later than the highly anticipated R5.
