First official pics: Volvo XC90 interior

Drip-feed promotional campaign begins for new SUV
Volvo has released official images showing the interior of the next-generation XC90 SUV, ahead of the new model's global media launch in August.
The interior images issued reveal that the dash and centre fascia are close, but not identical to the image we speculated was the production-ready dash for the new XC90. Clearly the two cabins are very similar – in a generic, corporate-looking way, but little things like the hood over the instrument binnacle, the air vents, centre fascia and centre console are all markedly different. Perhaps the earlier image showed a pre-production design that was never locked in...
Whatever the case, Volvo has now trotted out its formal pics of the XC90's interior, also offering its claim that the SUV's cabin is the most luxurious ever designed by Volvo.
"The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Cars. The iPad-like touch screen is the Apple CarPlay system, which is also being adopted by other car manufacturers.
Throughout the interior, Volvo has drawn on iconic Swedish design elements, including the combination of soft leather and wood, with 'diamond-cut' controls for the engine-start button and volume control. The gear shifter features crystal glass detail from Orrefors.
"These details are designed to become the jewels of the interior. They add a bit of exclusive playfulness rather than pure functionality," said Robin Page, Volvo Cars' Interior Design Director.
Seat comfort will be a highlight of the new XC90, according to Volvo. Careful design will liberate interior space, but the seats will give nothing away in comfort. Power adjustment – with three-position memory – will encompass a range of movement for side bolsters, seat cushion extension, multi-directional lumbar support and vertical adjustment of the headrests.
The second-row seat will be adjustable for slide and recline. Volvo claims that the third-row seat will offer acceptable headroom for those up to 170cm tall, and access will be made easier than the norm for seven-seat SUVs. Options will include an integrated child safety seat, ventilation and massaging, with a Contour seat option providing added side bolster support.
While the company is saying little about the XC90 other than its interior design, it admits that the new SUV will be built on the company's Scalable Product Architecture, a modular platform that will ultimately underpin a number of Volvo models.
The manufacturer plans to announce new elements of the XC90's design nearer the global media launch. Chassis and drivetrain details will be confirmed from the middle of July and safety and interior air quality elements will be progressively revealed from late July.
