Los Angeles-based Fisker Inc has confirmed it will supply a zero-emissions popemobile next year that will feature a solar roof and carpets made from plastic bottles recovered from the ocean.
Announcing that work has begun on the popemobile, Fisker says it will convert its latest pure-electric Fisker Ocean SUV for the task, adding a purpose-built retractable glass roof to allow the pope to greet crowds.
As part of its creation, Henrik Fisker confirmed he had travelled to the Vatican City to meet with officials to discuss plans for a new battery-powered popemobile.

There's no word on when Pope Francis will receive his new converted Ocean, but when it arrives it will join his specially adapted Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.
"I got inspired reading that Pope Francis is very considerate about the environment and the impact of climate change for future generations," said Fisker.

Production of the regular Fisker Ocean SUV, meanwhile, has been confirmed to begin this November at Magna Steyr's factory in Graz, Austria.
When it goes on sale in the US, Fisker has already announced its Tesla Model Y rival will be priced from just $US37,499 ($$48,500.)
