Specialist manufacturer Fisker Automotive has finalised the acquisition of GM's Wilmington assembly plant for an all-up price of US $20 million.
The plant, which is located in the US state of Delaware, previously produced two of GM's rear-drive sports cars, the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky. Fisker plans to build a new plug-in hybrid passenger car at the plant and claims that the revival of the plant will ultimately lead to 2000 new blue-collar jobs.
The new car, currently known internally as Project NINA, is part-funded by a loan of US $528.7 million from the American Department of Energy. According to Fisker, Project NINA will be smaller than its Karma hybrids (pictured).
"This is a major step toward creating thousands of manufacturing jobs and restoring America as a leader in the global auto industry," said Bernhard Koehler, COO, Fisker Automotive.
"Wilmington will be instrumental in fulfilling our plans to export more than half of Fisker premium plug-in hybrid production to global markets."
