Fisker Ocean EV priced from $54,000

All-electric SUV breaks cover in the USA; offers 480km range and multiple ownership options

New images and entry-level pricing of the Fisker Ocean EV have been revealed ahead of the all-electric SUV's launch at CES in Las Vegas this week.

Pegged from $US37,499 ($A54,000), the new model is still at least two years away from showrooms in the USA – and longer again for Australia, if the company gets its way and exports the Fisker Ocean to Oz.

The Fisker Ocean is slated to enter production in late 2021 with deliveries kicking off in 2022, and most owners are expected to go down the subscription path, with a monthly payment of $US379 ($A$545) covering all costs.

Fisker insists there's no lock-in contract with the Ocean subscription leases, meaning owners can opt-out after only a month, or stick with the vehicle for several years.

Entry-level models priced from under $US38K will be few and far between, with Fisker stating that the "new purchase options" are "for a limited amount of vehicles" only.

"With so much global enthusiasm around our no long-term contract, all-inclusive lease model, we're also answering the call of customers that have expressed interest in a purchase option," said Henrik Fisker, CEO of Fisker Inc.

The brainchild of former BMW and Aston Martin car designer Henrik Fisker, the Ocean has an 80kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers a target range of "approximately 250 to 300 miles, depending on driving conditions," says the company.

That's around 400 to 480km to use metric measurements.

If range is to be the benchmark for measuring EV performance, the Fisker Ocean will be bested by both its American competitors, the Tesla Model X (580km) and Ford Mustang Mach-E (600km).

Rear- and all-wheel drive Ocean SUVs will be offered and the 0-100km/h sprint will take around three seconds.

Some of the Fisker Ocean's unique selling points include its self-styled mantle of "the world's most sustainable vehicle" thanks to the use of recycled materials throughout the vehicle. The car makes use of recycled plastics, from bottles to ocean waste, and even recycled T-shirts. It also features solar panels on the roof.

The Fisker Ocean also gets the patented 'California mode' that offers one-touch 'open-air' driving, dropping side and rear windows and panels.

Interior features will include a tech-heavy cockpit which, like its rivals, will feature a large central touch-screen for infotainment duties and a smaller LCD instrument panel behind the steering wheel detailing road speed and navigation info.

Below the large central screen are five transparent, internally-illuminated buttons that operated primary functions, such as climate control, volume and a quick access to the home screen/main menu.

Fisker will offer two wireless phone chargers and a head-up display for the driver that is claimed to show music lyrics to the songs the driver is listening too, allowing for sing-alongs.

All Fisker purchasing, maintenance and remote vehicle controls can be performed through a smartphone app.

Today, customers can download the Fisker app and plonk down $US250 to reserve their vehicle. The app then takes care of monthly fees, servicing schedules, battery status checks, core vehicles systems and so on.

The new system makes Fisker "...the world’s first all-digital car company," claims Henrik Fisker.

"We are producing electric vehicles with an increased sense of sustainability, while creating an immersive experience built around our mobile platform," he said.

"When we began to design the Fisker Flexee app experience, we wanted to give our customers the power to access critical vehicle information, a unique media gallery, playable assets and more features that we will be adding over the next several months.

"Managing a Fisker vehicle and engaging directly with the company will be fun, hassle free and at your fingertips – anytime, anywhere," said the Fisker boss.

In the USA, Fisker has partnered with Electrify America, an open DC fast-charging network for EVs, but Fisker has not yet stated how quickly the Ocean will charge when hooked up to various charging stations.

The US car-maker is confident of attracting hundreds of thousands of buyers/subscribers and claims it will clock up more than a million sales over the next several years. It also plans to offer two more vehicles based on the same platform architecture underpinning the Fisker Ocean.

"We have secured a global supply chain and manufacturing capacity that will result in projected production of more than one million vehicles between 2022 and 2027," said the Fisker CEO.

"We look forward to sharing even more details at the Geneva Motor Show 2020 – including our fully-engineered platform and more technical specifications."
