Cars are the unsung heroes that act as the true supporting characters who might not have enough clout to get their own spin-offs but would definitely be noticed if all of a sudden had been killed off. Throughout the years, some of the biggest TV series to hit our screens have featured a car of some sort that through well-written plotlines and fun characters have built up an identity and personality of their own.
We take a look back at five cars from iconic TV shows which you can buy (a similar model to) on carsales.
Almost as iconic as Kath Day-Knight and Kim Craig nee Day themselves, the blue Holden Barina owned by Kath was a character in itself. Whether it was zipping around the Fountain Gate shopping centre carpark (take the Karen Street ramp, doll), a place for deep and meaningful conversations about Sharon’s love life, Kim’s dreams of being a trophy wife or Kath’s concerns that Kel is losing interest in her.
The ‘beep-beep’ Barina featured in the series about the foxy ladies from Fountain Lakes from 2002 to 2007.
Although the TV series starring Rowan Atkinson only ran for 15 episodes between 1990 and 1995, it still remains one of the most loved British comedies ever. As well as the title character, Mr Bean, a popular and recurring character to the series is his Citron-Green Morris Mini who most often than not sits at the centre of Bean’s antics.
Throughout the series, there were three main Minis used as well as two others painted with the same colour scheme but without an engine. These were used in the more dramatic scenes such as the episode where it gets crushed by a tank. An iconic feature of the Mini was the bolt-latch and padlock fitted to it, which became a running joke across the series.
What’s the deal with comedy and cars? Cars feature regularly across the 180 episodes of ‘90s cult classic Seinfeld. Which is no surprise considering co-creator and star of the show Jerry Seinfeld is a self-proclaimed car nut and collector of vintage Porsches.
Seinfeld weaves hilarious car moments throughout the series of offbeat, observational tales with the most interesting element being Jerry’s car of choice being a Saab 900S. For an American sitcom during the era when all American product was pushed to the forefront of the pop culture world, choosing a quirky Swedish brand (owned by American carmaker General Motors) is a curious choice, yet suits his character down to the T.
The Saab features in adventures such as the obsessive Saab mechanic, stuck in traffic during The Puerto Rican Day and The Dealership when Kramer takes a Saab on a very long test drive.
Lorelai Gilmore’s 2000 Jeep Wrangler is almost as iconic as Lorelai herself. The 2000s comedy-drama TV series Gilmore Girls centres around the relationship between a thirtysomething single mother, her teen daughter and their lives in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut.
The Jeep is almost an extension to Lorelai’s personality and has certainly been through a lot over the years, notably when it was hit by a deer on Rory’s way to school. Lorelai is extremely attached to her Jeep Wrangler, even going as far as to replace the entire engine when the car was considered ruined. It would’ve been cheaper to buy a new car, but she loved her Jeep and wasn’t ready to give it up.
The Jeep Wrangler featured in almost all of the 153 episodes of the series, making it more of a character than a car.
Between 2008 and 2013, Packed to the Rafters was Australia’s most popular TV drama. The series follows the lives of Dave and Julie Rafter who find their home full again after all of their adult kids move back home. One of the main characters is next door neighbour Nick ‘Carbo’ Karandonis who is a big petrolhead. As his nickname suggests, Carbo loves cars especially his pride and joy, an Orange Chrysler Valiant Charger. Complete with ‘CARB01’ number plates.
Throughout the series, Carbo tends to the Chrysler Valiant Charger as if it were his baby, casually taking it apart, putting it back together and being very proud of the 1970s Australian classic.
